This little one made her appearance right before I left town for the holidays, so we had to wait until I got back into town. Since she was a month old and not a new-newborn, we had some trouble getting her to sleep, but patience paid off in the end. She is such a sweet little Christmas baby and the spitting image of her big brother.

I want to thank everyone I've gotten emails from in the past few weeks about doing pictures, but just as a reminder that I have "closed shop" so to speak until the New Year. I get so wrapped up in the fall especially with taking pictures that I forget about documenting my own family. :) I also just won't be in Virginia for the rest of the month.

I had far too many favorites from this session...I seriously could have posted every single picture. A beautiful family + great kids who were happy to take pictures = awesome session. It was a bit of a hike to this location, but well worth it. :)

And in way of announcements, we just found out we will be moving to Wichita Falls, Texas in July! I will be cutting off my Richmond photo sessions (sniffle) at the end of April 2012. Life will be a little crazy next summer, but I will be in Utah (Salt Lake City area) for the month of June before moving to Texas. Exciting times!

But for now, enjoy the pictures of these beautiful folks...

I would have to say that the most challenging age for family pictures is right around 18 months-2 years old. These little kiddos are asserting their new-found independence, and being asked to sit still and smile for any period of time is not on their agenda. :) I have an 18 month old myself right now...and here is my philosophy on taking family photos with young children. LET THEM PLAY! You may not always get that "perfect" shot where everyone is smiling and looking straight at the camera, but you will get what is real. Honestly, I prefer those shots. Just have fun, relax (I'm talking to the parents), and even with a few tears from the little ones, family pictures can be FUN. P.S.: I will act like a monkey, chicken, robot...whatever makes your kids giggle; we'll make it happen. :)

Mom and Dad were great in this session, and just went with the flow even when their little guy broke down a few times. :)

I love this family. Just love them. Some days I consider their little guy to be just an extra one of my own rugrats running around the house. I'm not even going to think about how we're all moving in 7 short months to who knows where or...sniff...I'm going to start crying. I felt like I was let in on a secret when I was asked to take these pictures! This session is proof that you CAN do family pictures in the rain! I'm so excited they agreed to give the photo shoot a go even though it was drizzly and somewhat dark outside. It gave us the motivation to move and move FAST, which is exactly what these two little boys needed to keep from getting bored or distracted. I love this couple as well. They were willing to do a more go-with-the-flow session instead of everything being completely posed. I am heading into my busiest time of the year, so you will be seeing a lot of sessions over the next few months. Keep your fingers crossed I come out on the other side in one piece! :)

The Washington D.C. temple is one of my favorites. Coming from the north on the freeway, the temple seems to rise out of the trees. We couldn't have asked for better weather on Eric and Bethany's wedding day; the cloud cover made pictures a breeze! I always get nervous photographing large groups, and this group was no exception. The bride has 17, yes, 17 brothers and sisters, but everything went smoothly and both the bride and groom's families were great! Congratulations Eric and Bethany!

For my non LDS followers, "Mormon" wedding ceremonies aren't photographed or video recorded, so wedding day pictures are traditionally after the ceremony on temple grounds.

Happy 18 Months Baylor!

As a side note, I am really good friends with this little dude's momma, so I intended to leave both of my kiddos at her house with her husband while we did this mini-shoot. My 16 month old daughter is apparently TERRIFIED of her well over 6-feet tall husband. I have video-graphic proof of her freak-out; so, she ended up tagging along with us, and pretty much pouted the whole time since I wouldn't let her out of the stroller. :)

I don't often photograph bridals and weddings, but I absolutely love it! It gives me a chance to be more creative and relaxed. I absolutely loved working with this couple; we headed down to Richmond's canal walk for a "groomal" session. (For non-Utahns that's basically a bridal session with the groom included. I like it better that way.) A few days after this I was able to shoot their wedding at the Washington D.C. LDS Temple...pictures coming soon. :)

My husband mentioned to me that I don't often crop my photos straight out of camera, and I do have a reason for that. I've found that if I get aggressive with cropping how I think the image should look when printed, I often cut too much out since different sizes will result in different parts of the image having to be cropped. Not cropping too much until my clients are ready to print allows much more lee-way in getting the look they want.

Last Saturday I headed up to Charlottesville to meet this fun family! I know there are a few more families up there interested in sessions soon. I'm going to try to work out a Saturday that I can come up in the next month, but my two kiddos sure are keeping me busy. Stay tuned!

This family wanted urban pictures but also wanted to wear their Sunday best, so I thought of a great compromise. The nearby outdoor mall has that urban feel but a little "dressed up!" I got permission to take pictures early in the morning before the mall was even open. It was so strange (and awesome) to have us be the only ones there. Makes taking pictures 100x easier. It's been a great couple of months squeezing in some one on one time with my my little boy, welcoming our new baby girl, and settling into life as a family of four! Changes are coming this fall (beginning September) to my pricing and products offered. These will be posted in the next couple of weeks. If you or your spouse is a student (undergrad or postgraduate), current pricing will not change. I'm also excited to be photographing my first wedding in August! I'll be traveling to Dallas, TX for my little brother's wedding. :)

Here are some shots of my baby girl. She was totally uncooperative and we tried 3 separate days to get some images. She just wouldn't go to sleep! Don't get me wrong, she's an angel, but it is definitely a different experience photographing your own children when you have to play both roles.

As advance notice to all those interested in booking a session this spring, I will only be able to take a VERY LIMITED number of requests. I'm having some difficulty towards the end of this pregnancy (nothing serious, but I do have to take it easy). I will be booking sessions on a "how I'm feeling" basis. Send me an email with a specific date you have in mind, and about 7-10 days before that date I will let you know whether or not we can do it. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience, but I hope you understand. I will not be doing any sessions at all from mid-April until the beginning of July so I can focus on being a new mommy all over again!

Here are some more from a session I had a couple of weeks ago. I'm on a texture kick right now, most of those with texture also have counterparts without. For future clients, you'll often get multiple edits of the same photo if I can't decide which I like better. And that happens a lot.

I was lucky to take some pictures for our good friends the F. Family. Their little guy was a stinker this morning but we still managed to get a few good ones. I won't be able to finish editing their session before we leave for Utah on Thursday, but here's a preview for you guys! When we get back, watch out for picture overload! I've got at least 3 sessions booked during our vacation, so it should be loads of fun!

This little dude is all mine! And yes, he loves to wear his sunglasses anytime we're outside. Probably because Daddy wears sunglasses too, and Daddy is also super cool.
